The rest of the work week laboriously drags. My mind struggles to focus on the tasks at hand. I remind myself how important this job is, how I need to do my best. My promotion is riding on it. This could lead me to what I want. But I just can’t stop thinking about everything. I can’t stop thinking about him. My workaholic brain is being overthrown by my runaway, confused heart.

At Wednesday night yoga class, Sabrina demands I won’t be spending another weekend sulking in my hotel room. She makes plans to spend our Friday night shopping. I agree, mostly because I’ve always been a proponent of retail therapy.

On Friday evening, I’m laughing my way down the bustling streets of the city, able to shake off the funk that’s vexed me all week. Arms loaded with bags, Sabrina and I wander down 34th Street. We shoulder through the crowd, edging our way to our final stop. When the Macy’s sign is above us, we turn to each other, all smiles.

“Now we’re talking,” Sabrina says as she holds the door for me.

We spend the evening meandering through racks of clothing, Sabrina holding out item after item for me to try. When she hands me a slinky black dress, I scrunch my nose.

“Cute for you, but too much for me,” I say.

“Oh, stop. You need to step out of your shell. Loosen up. This is the kind of dress you get attention with.”

“I don’t need attention.”

At this, Sabrina glares at me. “Every woman needs attention. And with everything going on, you definitely could use some looks your way.”

I hesitantly reach for the dress. She’s right. Maybe it’s time for me to kick it up a notch, to let go a little more. After all, it’s not like there’s anyone at home missing me, anyone making an effort to notice me.
